How to Calculate Percentage Increase Between Two Numbers

The percentage change formula is: ((Final Value − Initial Value) ÷ Initial Value) × 100. Going from 80 to 100 works out as ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase. Going from 100 down to 80 gives ((80 − 100) ÷ 100) × 100 = −20%, a 20% decrease. Notice the two answers are different even though the numbers are the same — percentage change is always measured relative to the starting value, which is the most common mistake when doing it by hand.
