Analyze your content readability with Flesch Reading Ease and Grade Level scores

About the Readability Checker

Check how easy your writing is to understand using established readability scores. Paste your text and see the reading level required — a fast way to catch writing that is denser than your audience wants.

Readability formulas work primarily on sentence length and word complexity. Long sentences packed with multi-syllable words score as difficult; short sentences with common words score as easy. The Flesch Reading Ease score runs 0–100, where higher is easier: 60–70 is plain English suitable for general web content, below 30 reads like academic or legal text.

Most professional writing should target a grade 7–9 reading level. That isn't dumbing down — it's respecting that readers skim on phones between other tasks. Major newspapers write around this level deliberately. Simplify by breaking long sentences in two, cutting filler phrases, choosing shorter words where meaning allows, and using active voice. Technical documentation and legal writing legitimately score lower, but general web content, marketing and email should stay accessible.
